Valley Fever is the favorite name for the disease called coccidioidomycosis caused by the fungus Coccidioides immitis(2). This fungus grows in the San Joaquin Valley and south central California, Arizona, Modern Mexico, western Texas, southern Nevada, the south western corner of Utah, and northern Mexico (1). First reported in the United States in 1894, Valley Fever was officially declared an epidemic by the Arizona health department in 2006 after 5,500 cases were reported that year, including 33 deaths (3). In approximately 60 percent of the time the infection is asymptomatic and the host has no thought that they had contracted it.
